What determines concrete project cost?

A concrete price needs a site plan and a preparation scope. Square footage is useful, but it does not tell you what must be removed, what is underneath or how the finished surface will drain.

Compare the work below and above the surface

No current installed-price dataset was verified for concrete projects in these eleven cities. A locally inspected proposal is more defensible than a generic city price per square foot.

Scope itemWhat the estimate should clarify
Area and intended useMeasured footprint, parking or other loads, transitions and work that remains.
RemovalSaw cutting, demolition, hauling and protection of nearby surfaces.
Subgrade and baseExcavation, unsuitable material, compaction and the process for hidden conditions.
Design and drainageSpecified slab, reinforcement and joint plan appropriate to the project; finished elevations and runoff route.
Placement and finishAccess, delivery, chosen texture or decorative work and any compatibility requirements.
Protection and handoverCuring method, access restrictions, cleanup and written care instructions.

Resolve the water path before pricing the finish

Identify standing water, low doors, neighboring surfaces and the street connection during the site visit. A slab placed at the wrong elevation can leave an existing problem in place or create a new transition problem.

Ask whether the proposed footprint, fill or public connection needs local review. Slidell identifies paving permits and fill plans in its development process; other locations have their own city or parish process. Use the service-area page for the address rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

Partial replacement can change the comparison

Keeping sound concrete may reduce the replacement area, but the remaining slab still needs workable transitions, base support and drainage. Ask why a partial repair is recommended and how it will meet existing joints and elevations.

No universal thickness, reinforcement layout or strength is specified here. Those decisions need the project’s loads, site conditions and applicable design requirements.

Include the work after placement

Finishing and curing are separate stages. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association explains that curing manages moisture and temperature to support the concrete’s development. The estimate should identify the proposed curing method and protection from early use.

Hot weather changes placement and protection planning. Ask how the crew will handle the expected conditions and who will give the written walking and vehicle-access instructions.

Ask for a complete written comparison

Before comparing totals, make sure each proposal uses the same area, removal scope, base assumptions, finish and approval responsibilities. Put allowances and changes in writing.

  • Identify private paving separately from the sidewalk or street connection.
  • Ask what happens if excavation reveals unsuitable material.
  • Confirm specified thickness, reinforcement, joints and finish in the project documents.
  • Include a curing and access plan instead of a generic drive-on promise.
  • Read workmanship terms; do not assume concrete is guaranteed crack-free.

Common questions

How much does a driveway cost per square foot?

The area must be paired with removal, base, drainage, design, access and finish. We have not verified a current city-specific installed rate, so request a measured proposal for the actual site.

Why does removal and preparation change the price?

The existing slab, material beneath it, access and disposal determine the work needed before placement. A new finish does not correct an unsuitable base by itself.

Is there a grant for a new patio or decorative driveway?

No open concrete-specific grant was verified in these service areas. Necessary repairs under an eligible assistance program are a separate question for that program’s administrator.

What should I send for a concrete estimate?

Share the address, approximate dimensions, intended use, photos of the existing area and any drainage concerns. Identify whether it is a new surface, expansion or replacement.

Local requirements, program availability and product terms can change. Sources checked September 7, 2026. Confirm the current requirements for your property with the relevant authority before work begins.
