Louisiana homeowner guide
Roof materials, brands & warranties
Choose a roof system with a clear installation scope and written coverage. A brand name or “lifetime” headline cannot tell you everything about the materials, labor or conditions covered.

An asphalt-shingle system includes more than the visible shingles. Ask about the deck, underlayment, starter and ridge products, flashing, ventilation and compatible accessories. For metal, identify the specific system, fasteners or attachment, finish and compatible edge and penetration details.
Historic review, site exposure and the applicable installation requirements can narrow the suitable choices. A product comparison should follow the property assessment.
Manufacturer references to help you ask better questions
These are consumer research references. They do not establish that SCS supplies a brand, holds its installer credentials or includes a particular warranty. Confirm the proposed products and installer eligibility in writing.
| Reference | What to compare |
|---|---|
| GAF residential warranties | Coverage level, required system components, contractor eligibility, registration and exclusions. |
| CertainTeed Landmark | The exact product offered, its current specifications and the warranty that applies to your installation. |
| Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration | The proposed product and regional availability; request the current applicable technical and warranty documents. |
| Metal Roofing Alliance buyer’s guide | System types and questions about installation, finish, corrosion exposure and written warranty terms. |
Separate materials coverage from workmanship
Ask who is responsible for a material defect and who is responsible for an installation problem. Read the actual warranty for labor treatment, prorating, transfer, registration, maintenance duties and exclusions. “Lifetime” language should be read with the document’s definition and conditions.
| Document | Question to answer before signing |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer warranty | Which product or system is covered, for whom and under what conditions? |
| Workmanship warranty | Who responds to an installation issue, for how long, and with which exclusions? |
| Installation specification | Are the complete system and required accessories actually in the contract? |
| Completion records | Who provides registration evidence, permits and any designation certificate? |
A shingle rating is not a roof designation
An impact classification or manufacturer claim does not create an IBHS FORTIFIED designation. The standard addresses the assembly and documentation, and its optional Hail Supplement has separate current product criteria.
If resilience is a priority, discuss the pathway with a certified evaluator before choosing a covering. Keep product certification, local permit records and the IBHS designation distinct.
Bring these decisions to the estimate
State your priorities—appearance, repairability, maintenance, resilience and budget—then compare compatible systems for the actual home. Ask for specific product names and warranty documents alongside the installed scope.
- Check material or color restrictions with the local authority where relevant.
- Confirm the proposed installer’s current credentials if a warranty requires them.
- Ask what is included in maintenance and what could affect coverage.
- Keep a copy of the final product schedule and any registrations.

Common questions
Which roofing brand does SCS install?
This guide does not verify a current SCS product list or manufacturer certification. Ask for the products and applicable warranty terms in the written proposal.
Is a lifetime warranty the same as lifetime labor coverage?
No. Read the warranty’s definition, labor provisions, prorating and exclusions. Different coverage levels from the same manufacturer can have different terms.
Does an impact-resistant shingle automatically qualify as FORTIFIED?
No. FORTIFIED requires the applicable roof-system details, independent evaluation and IBHS review. Its optional Hail Supplement adds separate product requirements.
Is metal always the better choice?
Suitability depends on the specific system, home, exposure, installation, appearance constraints, maintenance and budget. Compare complete proposals rather than treating every metal roof as the same product.
