Before the
roof replacement.

The home had a dark shingle roof with a flue, turbine vent and pipe penetration. Once the old covering was removed, the plywood deck was visible. A close-up from tear-off shows splintered wood around an opening.

From tear-off
to underlayment.

The crew removed the old roof covering, then worked through the layers beneath the new shingles. The sequence below shows the exposed plywood deck, wood sheathing panels across a roof section and overlapping courses of roll underlayment before shingle installation.

Remove the old roofing.

Tear-off exposed the plywood deck: the wood surface beneath the roof covering. The close-up records splintered wood around an opening during removal.

Install the layers below the shingles.

Wood sheathing panels appear across the roof section, followed by roll underlayment. These stages show the layers beneath the finished shingle surface.

The finished shingle roof.

Gray architectural shingles replaced the original dark roof covering. The completed slopes meet at a capped ridge, with flashing visible around roof penetrations.

The close-up of the pipe flashing shows its metal base and rubber collar within the shingle courses.

Roof replacement questions.

What work was included in this roof replacement?

This New Orleans project included removal of the old roof covering and installation of gray architectural shingles. The project photos also document exposed decking, wood sheathing panels, roll underlayment, ridge caps and pipe flashing. Together, they show the work beneath the finished roof as well as its final surface.

What is beneath the new shingles?

The work photos show wood roof sheathing and roll underlayment beneath the new shingles. Sheathing forms the wood surface of the roof, while underlayment is laid over it before shingles are installed. The during-work gallery shows these layers before they were covered.
